The
Murder of Emmet Till
Emmet Till was a black teenager living in a mostly white community. He
spent most of his days picking cotton on the farm with his friends that were
also black. One day Emmet and his friends went to a super market to buy
something and Emmet's friends dare Emmet to say something to the white cashier.
The cashier is Carolyn Bryant, who is a white female. Emmet whistles to her and
she freaks out making Emmet and his friends run away. Black males were not
supposed to approach a white female during this time
period.
When Carolyn told her husband what had happened, he immediately sent out
a search party to find Emmet. When he finally found Emmet he took him and beat
him the whole night and finally killed him. When Mr. Bryant was interviewed he
said that Emmet Till was the one to do something wrong. He went to trial and did
not get convicted of any charges. This shows how the life of a black was back
then and how it was very unfair.
This event is important to the civil rights movement for many reasons.
This murder and story of Emmet Till shows how it was to live as a black back in
those days. They were treated very unfairly and the whites were superior. This
event also angered other black citizens and motivated them to keep up the
protests in the civil rights movement. It shows how something as harmless as
whistling to a white citizen can lead to a beating and death. The murder of
Emmet Till was a very important event in American History.
